Oh, I'll take anybody's reg. I've just noticed that, when I switch to my buddy's regulator, I often note that it's significantly more difficult to pull air than it is with mine. My husband's Zeagles are a case in point.

You went with a very good setup, I have the same 1st and 2nd stages. The S555 may be overkill for your octopus. I went with the s295 for that.

What do you mean here by "overkill" ? Remember, when you need the backup, you *really* need it, so you (and your buddy) are probably going to be stressed -- this is exactly the time that you will probably be glad your backup is of the same quality as your primary.
NOOOOO..... Say it isn't so.Ah yes , dem dere Zeagles.
I used to dive those before I switch to the Dive-Rites.
Maybe I should switch to Scuba-Pro's.
No Jean, Theys no such of a thing as "overkill" when it comes to life support gear.Er , I saw the overkill statement. I think as long as the regs work for you (etc.) hey , great ! As for myself , I am switching back and forth from Primary to Necklace regs all thru the dive just to make sure BOTH breathie thingies are functioning.
You can have the same level of quality without the bells and whistles. The s600 has adjustable breathing effort, where the 190, 290 do not. They have very similar innards and are all highly reliable. I'm not suggesting you compromise quality/reliability... but you may be willing to compromise on bells and whistles.
