How can one note whether the valve is open or closed without adjusting anything (unless the valve had an indicator)? Turning it slightly to check if it's open or closed would require putting it back in position if it's not fully open or closed. Maybe it's better to just leave it as is and transport it as carefully as possible to the police or coroner's office.

"Taketa-Graham was found in a kelp bed Friday morning wearing his wetsuit and goggles but no air tanks. His gear was recovered later from the bay floor, Sonne said."
