Hi All Scuba Friends:
My name is Rose Titus. My husband was Charles Titus (Charlie) who disappeared on a dive, September 21, 2009 (our wedding anniversary) on Grand Cayman. I have seen so many comments and speculations as well as requests to understand what happened. I will do my best to explain.
Charlie and I got certified in 1991 through PADI. We had been on approx. 30 dives. We travelled to the Caymans on 9/19/09 to celebrate our birthdays and our wedding anniversary. Charlie had preselected Divers Down as our dive company for 4 days of diving. He liked that they took out small groups of divers. We dove Stingray City on 9/20/09. On 9/21/09, we dove off of the North Wall-Eagle Ray Pass with 3 other divers and 2 people from Divers Down. We were briefed on the dive and buddies were assigned. There were 3 people in my buddy group, my husband, Charlie, myself and another diver. Shortly into the dive, I got terribly sick due to a motion sickness problem that sometimes happens with me. I alerted my husband (he was right beside me). The divemaster saw what was happening, and he came to assist. After getting the situation under control, the divemaster raised us up in the dive. We crossed over a coral shelf, and within a very short period of time (2 minutes), I realized my buddy wasn't there. I alerted our other buddy, and he did not know where Charlie was. I alerted the divemaster. He went back over the shelf to look for my husband. The divemaster then got us back on the boat and made the call that there was a missing diver. A multi-search from many agencies and private individuals as well as land searches were conducted for 4 days. The divemaster went back down to the site 4 times within a very quick period of time after the incident looking for my husband. We were on the boat for nearly 2 hours before returning to shore. It is my understanding that there was no bubble trail. All divers also looked to the water watching for my husband to surface. He did not. I can only speculate as to what happened, and I would appreciate other people not speculating as they were not there. Someday, when I join my husband, I will for sure be able to know and understand. In the interim, this is a very difficult situation on so many levels. I do not know for certain what happened! I did not get to say goodbye! We had an absolutely amazing marriage...some referred to it as we were role models for marriage! We were terribly happy! We had a great life together! I miss him every second of every day!
What has happened in the last year is that I have had to hire a law firm in the Caymans to get him declared dead. I returned to the Caymans in September, 2010 for a hearing. The judge declared Charlie presumed dead on or about 9/21/09. However, it appears now that the Registrar of births and deaths is refusing to issue a death certificate despite the fact that the judge issued an order. I do not understand how this could happen.
All affairs are on hold. Mine and my husband's life has literally been turned upside down. I would do anything to change this situation and to have the love of my life here by my side.
My husband was a truly remarkable man. He was an attorney, an author, a musician...he could do anything. We had so many sports and hobbies that we did together. He was an amazing husband, and I am so honored to be his wife! He also was a father, a grandfather, a brother, a son-in-law, a brother-in-law and a true friend to all. He helped so, so, so many people in life. Charlie could always make people laugh!
More than anything, we had a love and mutual respect so deep for one another that it cannot be explained. My heart aches for his return, but I know that cannot happen. It is our love that helps me get through the days.
I hope this helps some of you with your ideas and speculations on what has happened. I am sorry it has taken me this long to reach out to you.
Warm regards scuba buddies,
Rose Titus
