Mini trip report -- Sandwich Town Beach

Nice early evening dive at Sandwich Town Beach last night. After a hot day in Boston, it was nice to head down to the Cape, where air temps were about 10 degrees cooler. Water temp was a consistent 59F. There were five of us in the group -- 3 were hunting lobster...total catch was about 6 plus 1 fluke. Conditions were very calm and visibility was decent....perhaps 20 feet. My special "find" was a golfball about 200 yards from shore.....

We were actually hoping to see some sharks.....2 beaches on the CC bay side in Dennis were closed yesterday after a boater apparently saw 3 sharks close to shore...no such luck.

Question regarding Sandwich Town Beach....

If you were looking to some lobster hunting, what is the best part of the beach to dive from? Is it near the where the creek meets the ocean or closer to the canal? Don't give away your secret spot or anything, I'm just looking to save some time searching. Thanks.

I don't hunt lobsters, so I won't be giving away anything, but here's what I've seen on my dives there.....

As you stand on the beach looking towards the water, you have 2 main "zones" that I've encountered -- to the left towards the canal, the bottom is more rocky. When I say left, I mean use the first path you come to on the left when you come into the parking lot -- the closer you are to the stone jetty on the left side of the main beach, the rockier the bottom is.

To the right you will see a bottom that is more clay/sand -- not a desolate sand "desert"...just less rocky and still very scenic. When I say right, this means coming on to the beach from the boardwalk that is adjacent to the bathrooms/snackbar and then diving in a diagnonal line (I forget the exact heading -- basically northeast) towards the right.

I have never parked/dove from the end of the beach closest to the creek...no comments to offer you on that area

I have seen people take lobsters from both "zones" mentioned above. The folks I've been diving with there have typically been lobster hunting......and they seem to be able to find them in either direction.........but if I were a betting man, I guess I would choose the rocks first.
