I'm looking for a roller type. What will be the minimum required gear bag capacity? Vendors always give dimensions and capacity info on their spec sheets. I'm interested in Scubapro's Caravan Bag, it's about 5000 Cu.in., seems a little bit small. My be i need a larger one.
Any idea? :54:
My Gears;
Scubapro Glide2000 BC
Scubapro Reg & Octo (Yoke)
5mm Full suit & hood
5mm Shorty
Fins, Mask w/case, Boots, Gloves
Scubapro Pocket Light
No weight

I got a great deal on a bag from Western Pack (under $40.00) and it measures 14 by 17 by 36 for a total of 8500 cu in in the main compartment.

The good news is that it has a ton of space and is large enough that I could probably live in it if I miss my airline connection. It is also not readily identifyable as a dive bag and does not scream "steal me" like a bag with "Scubapro" or a dive flag on the side tends to do.

The bad news is that the total of the external measurments is 67 inches and over the size limit of most airlines which means I ended up adding cmpression straps on the sides to allow me to reduce the height of the bag to reduce it's bulk.

If I had to do it again, I would buy the 32 inch version from Western Pack as it would offer more than enough room for all my gear and 7mm wetsuit but with its smaller overall dimensions would be more airline freindly.

8500 cu in is overkill but 5000 cu in may be just a little on the small side.

Put everything in a cardboard box, packed as tightly as you can
but without using any force. Then measure all three dimensions
and multiply to find volume. My bet is it will be under 5000.

I own a few Pelican cases. They truely are indestructable.
the 1650 is just over 5000 cu and the 1660 is even larger.
No kidding you could drive a car over these cases or loose them
over the edge of a dock with no damage (or sinking) and if
they do ever break Pelican wil fix them. I doubt you could
damage one if you tried

But if you can't try out a case for size make a stand-in of the
same size with card board and duck tape before you place an
order.

We took some high end video equipment on my boat last summer
in a pelican case. The owner would toss the case containing $10,000 of equipment in to the water then drug it up on his surfboard and
paddeled it to shore.
