Mid-Range vs. PnS Camera Shutter Speed

Sorry for the basic question.

I have a Canon S230. I have to wait a while for the camera to take a picture, like most low-range PnS cameras. How much faster can you take a good quality picture with, for example, an Olympus C-7070? Is it more towards to speed of an SLR or just the same as a PnS? My friend has a 5-MP Sony and it take pictures very quickly (mid-range camera with a bunch of manual settings, though I was taking pictures with Auto setting and it was fast.)
