Hi Guys

I'm visiting Miami area for two weeks starting 6 August, I'm doing land based stuff with friends until the 14th. I can squeeze some diving in this week if there is something special but I'm on my own from the 14 and would like to get some diving done.

I'll be bringing kit with me but I'm looking for advice on where to dive and what to see.

Please can you tell me what suit I'll need or what the water temperature is.

Thanks for reading.

Water temps are currently 84. Miami has better wreck diving in ranges of 15 meters to 80 meters. If you want to see reefs, head to Boynton Beach or Key Largo, both about an hour's drive away.

Thanks for that, I like wrecks and reefs but I can get reefs anywhere the wrecks that you have are individual.

I've read about the Speigal Grove but is there a site with other wreck information on it or a book.

Is all the diving through dive centres?

You definitely need a boat for the wreck diving but most boats can be booked directly without going through a shop.

The Speigal Grove is in Key Largo - +/- 55 miles from Miami - but close enough that could dive both places; just not with the same operator.

Highly recommend HMS Minnow and Conch Republic for Key Largo area diving.

Try these folks for diving in Miami - their contact info is at the bottom:

Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming...

Simon - I saw your post on RBW as well. :)
If tech dives are what you'd like to do, just let me know and we'll make it happen. As Tony said, the Hydro Atlantic is a "don't miss" at 55 meters deep with a 90 meter LOA. We have a great core group of divers that tech dive regularly but there's not that many boats running tech trips.

Thanks for that Brian, This why I'm trying to find out what there is to dive and what's going on while I'm there,

I'm booked to fly out of Miami on the 20th and I'm totally free from the 14 so I don't even have to stay in the area.

I have to decide what kit to bring, try and stay flexible and see what I can rent and what I have to bring.

This is a last minute trip I had no Idea until yesterday morning that I'd be coming so I'm just trying to get the research done then I can take full advantage of your beautiful coast.

It doesn't help that i have two homes one in England and one in Egypt, this means that my kit is in two halves, warm water kit in Egypt and cold in England. Right now I'm in England with various dry suits and a 2 mil shortie that I use for the pool. At 28 deg I'll get away with the shortie but if there's a Thermocline down to say 20deg or below Ive cut my bottom time (sorry for the metric, the french have made us use it).

The more I can plan and prepare this side the easier it will be when I'm over.

This is just the diving side, I'm struggling for clothes as well, I only have 3 pairs of shorts in England, one for each day of the year that the sun shines. I need to shop.

Have a good day.

Your 2 mil shortie is just fine for both Miami and Key Largo. I am extremely cold-natured and I recently dove Key Largo for one week and actually didn't even use a wetsuit. In fact, most of the divers were simply in swim trunks, with a few wearing short-sleeved rash shirts or tee shirts. I prefer no shirt. Very refreshing.

Miami has some nice wrecks but not very much at all in the way of natural reefs. If I may, I would suggest a rental car, drive down to Key Largo and spend your 6 days diving there. You have 3 very decent wreck dives (SG, Duane and Bibb) in Key Largo and the very nice Eagle wreck out of Islamorada, which is just a stone's throw down Highway 1 from Key Largo. You will also have some very stunning natural reefs rivaling the Carribean. The real icing on the cake is the laid-back pace of life in Key Largo. No hurries, no large crowds and very little traffic to speak of. Just diving and relaxing. I love Key Largo but I am also quite fond of Miami. My wife is my dive buddy, which means for the one week of diving in Key Largo, I must give her at least two days of South Beach and the Lincoln mall. It seems to be her "mandatory" safety stop before boarding the plane.

Whatever you decide...I hope your holiday goes well.
