I'm heading to Playa del Carmen on the mayan riviera next week. Oct 19-26. I was there in April, and had a great time. I really enjoyed the Cenotes. i believe the one i did was taj mahal. just wondering if anyone has had any great experiences with any other cenotes in the area. or any other cool dive sites I should know about. Also, the diving packages i book last time were kind of pricey. Anyone have any info on how to get some great dives in, at some great prices. thanks everyone

Sounds like you've been hooked by the cenotes as well! I did my first one, Dos Ojos (barbie line and bat cave), 4-5 years ago now and was instantly in love. Since then I've done Temple of Doom, Grand, El Eden, Dreamgate, Xtabay and Chikin Ha. All of them seem to be my favorite right after I've done them simply because of recency! All are somewhat different though. El Eden has some really pronounced haloclynes, Chikin Ha has different formations than some of the others, less stalactites and stalagmites, more "eroded" limestone and had a spot where you can get some really dramatic light pictures. Dos Ojos is probably the most well known and travelled and as such has great facilities for set up, etc, it's also very nice. Dreamgate is stunning both up and downstream, awesome formations but further off the beaten path and almost no facilities there. I've got six new ones planned for the end of this month while we're there for a week!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Nico from CenoteXperience - he and his brother Martin run the shop. I've dived with them the last couple times down there and did my IANTD Cavern with Nico. Great guide, awesome service, very safety conscience. You will be hard pressed to find a better outfit!

Have fun, dive safe!

I did Dos Ojos last month which was a lot of fun. The barbie line opens up more while the bat cave route is a bit more dark and restrictive- feels more like a cave dive from what I understand. Amazing viz and some really nice speleothems throughout.

My recomendation is to go to Pet Cementery, and Angelita if you have experience. We will be glad to dive with you if you want... Enjoy your dives!!
