Troubled Mexicana Airlines will suspend all flights as of Saturday until it can restructure, according to media reports and the Mexico airline’s website. Options for Mexicana customers who hold tickets remained uncertain Friday. The precise time that flights would halt was not entirely clear; Mexicana said noon Saturday, which could mean noon in Mexico City, or 10 a.m. PDT.

Customers from Canada and the U.S. who have reservations on Mexicana flights leaving after noon Saturday were being asked to call the airline at (888) 882-9994 or (877) 801-2010. (Information numbers for travelers from other parts of the world are also listed on the website.)

Be patient if you need to get through to a ticket agent. I was on hold for 20 minutes before being connected with a reservations agent.

The agent told me that the airline is trying to place passengers booked on flights after noon Saturday on other airlines. He said Mexicana is negotiating with other carriers, but he couldn’t say which ones would be offering seats to potentially stranded passengers.

Mexicana flights appeared to be on schedule Friday afternoon, according to L.A. International Airport’s website. For example, a 5 p.m. flight to Honolulu and 5:10 p.m. flight to Reno appeared to be leaving on time, and others were listed as “scheduled.”

Mexicana’s website gives instructions for requesting ticket refunds, but the reservations agent said passengers can’t request refunds until their flights have been canceled. Also, it’s uncertain how refunds would be given when the airline is such poor financial shape.

The airline filed for bankruptcy and suspended some of its long-haul international flights earlier this month.
