Anyone have experience with this Hotel?

I haven't stayed there, but in case you haven't already found the review on tripadvisor.com, here it is:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...-Melia_Cozumel-Cozumel_Yucatan_Peninsula.html

It is the northern most hotel on the island. If you do stay there, plan on either taking a taxi to meet the morning dive boat, or renting a car. I don't think there are any dive operators that will go that far north to pick up divers.

My bride and I stayed at the Melia in June and will stay there again in October.

We were in the timeshare tower and the room was just fine. Clean and comfortable. You probably know that the place is an all inclusive. The food is good. Buffet, grill and a shirt and pants/reservations-only dinner restaurant that was quite good. International brands of booze at the three bars. That's a real plus.

Not sure what the A.I. cost is now, but it was $45 per day/per person on our last visit. I read elsewhere that you can go alcohol-only A.I. That's probably what we'll do on our next visit, as Cozumel has so many great restaurants. Be sure to see Christi's favorite restaurants "sticky" on this board.

Melia has a nice layout, with the family/kids pool seperated from the adults swim-up bar pool. The beach is nice, but you'll find clearer water at the next property to the south. There's a concrete pier fouling the flow in front of the Melia. Sometimes the water's O.K., sometimes not.

I am going to be there Saturday morning myself. They are correct about no ops picking up that far north. The closest was Scuba Du picking up at Playa Azul*. The taxi fares are high but reasonable to get to town or the marina, about $6 for town and $10 for the calleta marina (thanks to Christie for posting the fares for me).

This will be our first time at the Melia (traded to the Grand and the Reef Club before) so we are hoping that it is as nice as everyone says it is.

Woohooo.....2 days and a wake up!

I was there in April...had a good time. The hotel was nice, food was acceptable, service good, and it was nice to be out of the main hotel zone (it's the northernmost hotel)...nice and quiet.

The only down side was the water there is very murky....because of the angle of the beach, seaweed fills the area. However, next door, a couple hundred feet away, is another hotel with a pier that blocks all this seaweed and has crystal crystal clear water with trumpetfish, stingrays, barracuda, angelfish, butterflyfish...all sorts of marine life to snorkel with. Some days the seaweed was worse than others...some days, I wouldn't swim in front of our hotel, others it was nice and clear, but it was never a problem to go down to the other hotel for some swimming and snorkeling.

My family and I just returned form the Melia, It is a lovely hotel and we stayed in the 11 story tower as par tof the Vacation Club, We opted out of the all inclusive because you can eat cheaper and better in town. Seemed like most of the people staying at the hotel just want to stay by the pool and drink most of th afternoon. We went to dive for four days. We dove with ScubaTony and I can't say enough great things about how he made the diving for my family so special. If you haven't booked a dive op you might try him. He is more of "boutique" dive op. He specializes in small groups and he is you divemaster. He usually uses a boat for 6 and will take you places taht aren't crowded, and if they are he will go back for the second dive.
Anyway, the water in front of the Melia is brown and it smells because of the mangrove trees that are on the property. It leeches into the ground water and spreads to the water on shore, its trapped by that stupid pier. The snorkeling isn't that great in front of the other hotel anyway. Take a car and drive down to the beach at Paridise shallows or Dzul Ha beach.
We got a good deal on a rent car from Thrifty online. They are not in the airport, but if you walk out of th airport and cross the street their office is right there. You will need and rental car if you are diving and staying at the Melia.
I hope you have as good a time as we did.

Michael
