What is your location, experience level and what are your diving interests? That would help with what clubs to recommend... :)

Good dive shops I have found are The Scuba Doctor - Home - Scuba Service and Repair, Dive Shop, Courses and Trips (my preferred LDS), Aquability Australia Scuba Diving Training Centre and Academy Of Scuba Home, Scuba Diving Melbourne - Academy Of Scuba.

The main charters are Welcome to Dive Victoria | Dive Victoria (this is the biggest), there's also Oz Dive Charters - SCUBA Diving Charters Melbourne - Home and Scuttlebutt Scuba Charters (though the last one operates out of Torquay normally).

For sites, well depends what you are into. Heaps of shore dives available and this book is cheap ($25ish) and very helpful with shore dives planning: 'Shore Dives of Victoria' by Ian Lewis. The piers are popular, in particular Portsea, Mornington, Rye, Blairgowrie, Flinders and St. Leonard's.

For boat dives, Lonsdale Wall is awesome, there's heaps of wrecks to dive (popular ones are Eliza Ramsden, Coogee, the J class subs), lots of reef sites, and there are often drift dives.

Thanks,

im a dive master with over 100 dives, wrecks, happy with depth with more than 20 over 30 m,have done a wide range of drifts and all ranges of vis, i love turtles and finding things like jawfish, pipefish, frog fish, sharks, big stuff, really im quite easily satisfied,

live in north fitzroy have no car or gear except a mask, looking to develop some tech skills, ( more about the skills than the depths) and will aim to purchase a harness, wing and back plate etc. just wanting to try a few different set ups before sinking the cash, have dived on dive rite travel wing and a few different back inflators, my interest fall within the exploration or diving with a specific aim or purpose eg: look at a specific part of a wreck or explore one penetration point, as i find this give the diving more satisfaction, ( goal oriented etc hahaha)

hope that give a bit more insight, the charters ive looked at have been very expensive so i guess aiming to dive frequently.

cheers

Which shops have you been to? Some are very expensive and yes, difficult... What I tend to do is get prices of Leisurepro then ask shops to match it plus 10% or so for service. The ones who get annoyed at this are not worth going to. There is also divetub.com - he prices matches overseas.

A uni club is a good idea. There is also the Monash Uni club as well. Once you meet some people at clubs you might be able to get lifts and things like that for diving.

Keen to get a bit of kit, jet fins and contemplating a back plate etc. will trial a few different set ups to see what works thanks saspotato. even if someone wants to go fro a dive ( im trying to see what the waters like before i spend up) that would be cool.

may have to wait till im employed again though :(
