I have to deal with hungry Gators?? How often does someone get nipped?

I bet Gators would think Otters are tasty :(

I have never heard of a verifiable case of a diver being bitten by a gator locally.Fossil diving has been popular locally since the 50's.Not once have I heard of it.Sharks are another story.Only know of 2 guys that actually had teeth touch them both were spearfishing in lo-vis.It's much more dangerous here to surf or jet-ski.

I don't mind the low viz, but worrying about gators AND sharks....just to get some million-year old teeth. And then I get womped on the back of the head by some drunk ski boat skipper. No wonder the teeth are still there after all these years

Yeah... but didn't a 12yo kid get taken the other day by an alligator while playing in a canal? Might be something to keep in mind when farting about in the creeks for teeth using a snorkel!

I am bigger than a 12 year old kid and (1) wouldn't flatulence (sp?) drive the gators away or is it an attractant and (2) you have confirmed that snorkels are baaaaad.

Farting about in a 40' deep river with 2' vis on a good day with currents that run over 2kts and up to 4 at peak full moon tides.Thats about 7klicks or a fast walk. The drunk ski-boats and jetskis are far more dangerous in Fla as are lightning, mosquitos, rattlesnakes, bees, rabid animals, and a whole host of others causes. You are more likey to die driving to the site than in it.The teeth can fetch several thousand dollars each.An average tooth from StMarys may be valued around $200US.They also look phat on display in the house.

Here's a few links to some articles by the Orlando Sentinel on the recent alligator attack.

Gator kills Lake youth near Tavares

Hundreds remember boy killed by gator

Florida's fatal alligator attacks

Was this the one you were talking about?

That was the one.

Mind you, I grew up Australia - there's parts of the country that getting into *any* body of water is a no-no because of crocodiles. So maybe I'm paranoid.
