There are lots of public lists of known VPN ip's. Some people try to charge for the lists but you can find them for free as well. Grab some of the VPN IP lists and mas-ban the ip's. Or just setup a batch file to route them to 127.0.0.1 if xenforo doesn't have a mass ban feature.

I've been thinking of subscribing to a VPN just for online security. Would this strategy ban anyone who logs on through these VPNs?

Oh they did more posts wonderful. Same person, yeah.
 
We subscribe to StopForumSpam, which does a fairly good job of stopping this kind of thing until yesterday. They look at IPs, emails and other criteria in order to flag accounts and have us look at them before we allow them on. This current endemic is probably a bot that has figured out a way to spam without triggering the SFS. Hopefully, SFS will figure this out and we'll have a solution soon. Until that time, feel free to report any problematic posts/posters and we will subsequently take out the trash.
