Once you say yes on the form you need clearance from a doctor. My insurance would not permit otherwise. I can't see letting it slide just because a student thinks its under control.

Whatgoesdown:The term asthma seems to be disappearing and RAD (Reactive Airway Disease) is coming into fashion. It used to be that any type of asthma would prohibit you from diving but that is changing. The main issue is whether dry air is going to irritate your airway. QUOTE]
I agree with the above. I have read this statement before during my research about asthma affecting my aspirations. I thank my lucky stars that dry air hasn't impacted on my condition so far.
Thankfully it appears that the generalisation of asthma has disappeared. I can't tell you enough how devestated i was when i was adamant to take up this sport and only to find my research dictated that "asthma sufferers should not dive".
I strongly believe that we hold a wholly responsibility to ourselves when declaring any conditions which may jeapordise our participation in this sport. On the other hand, declaring any condition which contravenes the medical statement does not necessarily mean that they rule you out, you just owe it to yourself to be sensible in any condition outlined in your medical statement.
Happy and safe diving.

spectrum:I hear you on that.
Prior to my wife and I getting certified I did some online research since she has asthma (allergy triggered) The first few sites I "googled" put asthma as total contraindicator to diving, period, no iffs ands or buts. I was heartbroken to think she could not join me. As I recall these were UK and AU sites where they tow a much more conservative line.
Thankfully further research and her visit to the doctor cleared her to dive and she has been fine.
