Just got home and I was hosed by the op at the Grand Mayan. I devoted most of my trip to Cave diving, but wanted a reef dive for my last day. Had a reservation for Friday so I showed up in the AM to dive, as I was walking to the dive hut I overheard a couple of girls (late teens / early 20s) talking about how lucky they were to get in on a last minute discover dive that morning. Showed up at the shop and was told, sorry, there was a mix up and we don't have tanks for you. I'm not stupid so it's apparent that they dumped me in favor of more profitable discover divers, crummy deal since by then it was too late to go to town to book a trip.

My advice:
If you want a quality, reliable operator avoid the shop at the Grand Mayan.

Jim - Thanks for the tip; that's exactly the sort of info I have been looking for.

My wife and I are staying at the Grand Mayan with her folks in May, and I'm trying to figure out diving plans. From what you're saying, I may have my wife do the refresher course through the resort's dive shop, but I think we'll do our real diving through one of the dive ops in playa.

Get something in writing when you make your reservation, but I'd expect them to do back flips for a refresher class. That should be good there since they have a deep section of the pool for confined water work.

Lots of quality dive shops in Playa. I've had great dives with Phantom Divers. Good people. Go to all the top spots. Reasonably priced. Convenient parking. Good equipment and boats. All around good shop.

Just be aware that Phantom Divers are the ones that are chumming the bull sharks in Playa del Carmen. For that reason, and that reason only, I personally will not use them. I don't want bull sharks, reputedly one of the most aggressive feeders, being chummed within sight of the beach where my grandchildren play. I believe this to be irresponsible and encourage anyone who shares my opion to boycott Phanton Divers.

I find that a little hard to believe, but if that's indeed the case, that is very very bad news. (It didn't take but a second after posting this to find info on that very thing, however. I'll read more.)
