I am already doing one trip with Ed Robinson, a local 2 tank (most likely Molokini), but my question is whether it is worth doing my second trip to Lanai or stick with the local trip? Are the Cathedrals and other dive sites off Lanai worth the extra hour travel time? My gut tells me yes, mainly because of the lack of pressure this island gets. Any thoughs?

My dives at Cathedrals were the highlight of my trip, especially the twilight dive at First Cathedral. I imagine that the repeat value is a bit limited, but that first trip was awesome.

Besides, a little extra travel in Hawaii isn't exactly a heavy burden!

I enjoyed the backwall of molokini much more than Lanai. But why not dive everything?

If you can't do the back wall of molokini...then sure, check out the cathedrals...

they can be very fun. I did them three times last feb...but then again, I was staying on Lanai for several days.

PM me if you want more info...

I'd dive the backwall of Molokini over the Cathedrals anyday. Lanai gets a lot of divers from Maui so I'm not sure there's a lack of pressure.

Shark(fin) Rock is a good dive there that's done less frequently as there's a ripping current on the outside of the pinnacle, so a lot of divers go in along the shore cliffs to play with the octopus. Actually our DM led the group that way, but my buddy and I decided to go to the outside. Just about killed me fighting the current, but it was worth it, there were schools of Moorish Idols and eels dancing in the current on the sand flats. There's also several fairly aggressive large Triggers that guard their territory as you drift by. Some Cathedrals trips do it as a second or alternate dive when there's too many boats at Cathedrals.

There's another area there, can't remember the name, where several of the boats take groups to look for sharks in some caves, however when we dove there, the sharks were MIA. So it winds up being a nice swim over the reef.

Cathedrals is one of those "experience" dives, not particularly beautiful, but definitely unlike most other dives in Hawaii - except for some similar stuff off Kauai. Having done it once I wouldn't go back again.

I would love to, but I do not want to abandon my wife every morning.
aaaah, newlywed,, don't worry, you'll get over that

I have decided to to three boat dives, two trips to Molokini (or wherever they decide) and one to Lanai. I figure three mornings out of the 10 we are there is not do much abandonment. :D

Actually 5 year anniversary.
Congratulations and I've served 30 years this June. She didn't dive until 5 years ago. Now I can't stop her.
