The major factor is that you feel the AL tank tug on your harness/jacket as it became positive. Back when I didn't have an SPG, it was a handy indicator and was reassuring, some folks don't feel that way.

Also, you hit an important point, which is lung volume. Before BCDs it was taught as a tool for precise buoyancy control, since we were usually slightly negative, by not exhaling fully you could add positive on command to get close to something and hold position to make the shot whether it was a camera or a speargun.
