A non-resident permit would expire in September. If an officer was to check your permit it would no longer be valid and you would be in violation of M.G.L. Chapter 130 Section 38 which would carry a $100 fine and 1 Month in Jail.

Get mom to get her license, then, as a member of her immediate family go buy a divers permit. Once you hand them the permit fee, I really doubt that the state of Mass is gonna do an investigation to see if you ever sleep outside that state, and once you have your permit the sight officer wont be a problem. Your all legal at that point. Enjoy dinner!
