Spotting...fogging... I'm a baby diver so it's ALL new to me. Thanks for all the suggestions!

50% Water with Vinegar works great on removing spots on glass. I also regularly use a toothpast on my mask (especially the skirt) to keep it fresh (mint smells nice).

Sorry if this is a really dumb question: I'm getting certified this weekend so I'm SUPER new at this!

After I get out of the water, I always rinse off my gear and let it air dry (like the PADI book says.) The problem is, my mask gets water spots on the lenses. Can masks be cleaned with glass cleaner? What's the best way to avoid this?

Thanks!

I Like To Use A Soft Towel To Dry My Mask.

Whenever possible, I dry my mask thoroughly and store it back in the mask box. I used to let it air dry and would get the spots on the lens and also the clear silicon skirt began to yellow - yuck! I think the yellowing came from drying it in the sun, so if you still opt to air dry try keeping it out of direct sunlight to avoid the yellowing. BTW good luck with your certification dives!

Thanx For The Tip Cindy. :-)

Assuming you have cleaned the new mask well with toothpaste.....

Take a small bottle container and and mix 4/5 water.... 1/5 baby no tears shampoo and shake well. Squirt a generous amount inside the mask and swish around....the mask that is....

pour remaining mixture out and just sit the mask down and let it dry....dont worry about spots. When you get to your dive site next time.....squirt some more no tears solution you mixed into the mask and swish around.....again the mask....and pour out remaining amount.

Your mask should not fog at all even with breathing inside it.

I'm Sorry But Do You Rinse It Off With Water after or not?

Thanx Cindy :-)

First you say pour out the rest and then you want to use it next time? :chin:

:doh!: OH!! You missed a few "...again the mask..." after the pour out steps. ;)

Whatever happened to the good old organic home grown variety of defogger?
Everything else I've ever tried (three different masks with) would not consistently keep my mask fog free. Yet with a healthy hawk, I never have fogging problems. A little spit a rinse and you're ready to go. And oh bt the way, did I mention you don't have to pay anyone for this.

Umm... no offense, but water spots are really not a big issue. There is no way to keep your mask perfectly clean & clear ALL the time.

The fogging thing.. already been covered. But to reiterate:

For a new mask, take some toothpaste (not the gel type), put it on your finger tip, and rub the inside of the lenses. Thoroughly rinse. Repeat if necessary. The inside of the lenses should be "squeeky clean". Then gently dry with paper towel or allow to air dry.

To keep from fogging: ANY type of no-tears baby shampoo. Put a drop or two on each lens. Move around with your finger to coat in the inside of the glass well. Gently dunk in fresh water ONCE to get rid of the excess, but not wash away the thin layer of baby shampoo. Use as necessary when diving. Or spit will do. ;)

Eventually, fogging will re-occur due to accumulation of oils from your body/sweat. When that happens, do the toothpaste thing again.

BTW, the very first time you jump in the water, you will forget all about whether or not there is a water spot on your mask lenses... you'll be too busy having fun to notice!
