Sorry if this is a really dumb question: I'm getting certified this weekend so I'm SUPER new at this!

After I get out of the water, I always rinse off my gear and let it air dry (like the PADI book says.) The problem is, my mask gets water spots on the lenses. Can masks be cleaned with glass cleaner? What's the best way to avoid this?

Thanks!

Try cleaning it with toothpaste. Smear toothpaste on both sides of the lens, leave it on there for half an hour then rub it off with a dry cloth. You should only need to do this once. This should remove all the grease and when you rinse it in future it will be squeaky clean.

PS don't try this with plastic lenses.

I use that car-wax-type mask defogger, it provides a nice sheeting action, like that dish detergent. :D

I forget what it's called, but I got it from Divers Direct, you smear it on, let it dry, and wipe off with a dry cloth, like car wax.

I've tried everything under the sun to stop my mask from fogging, and it still foggs. I've been using it for almost 6 months now and have done numerous dives with it, yet it continues to fogg. I know it can't be because I'm exhaling out of my nose a little because I've tried other masks and they havn't fogged up. ;-0
And $85 mask and I'm thinking about junking it.

If you've done the toothpaste thing and the antifog thing then try putting the mask on before you get your face wet and leaving it on until you are done with the dive. It works for me. happy diving. :)

I don't think she was talking about fogging, I think she meant that the drying water left spots.

To avoid this, just dry out the mask instead of letting it air dry.

You can use Windex on the outside, but don't on the inside.. there will be residue that will irritate your eyes on your next dive.

I just don't worry about it.. when I go on my next dive, the spots disappear when I apply defogger and rinse the mask.
