Ok, I know I'm a complete newbie, but when I did my open water a year and a half ago, my instructor (PADI) was very adiment that we not wear our mask on our forhead as that's what a panicing diver would do. We had to wear them around our neck when above water. If they were on our forehead he would splash us asking if we were in trouble. It was a habit that was quickly changed.

I found it kind of ironic that the Padi Website has people with masks on their foreheads. Just an observation.

A paniced diver is going to rip the mask off their face , not place it on the forehead.

I will usually wear my mask till out of the water. On a calm day I might place it on my forehead while waiting to get in the boat.

It's easier to replace the mask from the forehead, but also easier to get it knocked off and lost.

You'll lose your mask a lot quicker if it's on your forehead... :D

If a diver trained to put his mask around his neck puts his mask on his forehead, it may mean he is not thinking clearly.

I think "panicked" or "in distress" is reading far too much into it, although asking the diver if he is okay is not out of line.

Check out the picture of the Editor of Sport Diver..HIS mask is on his forehead...and PADI teaches you NOT to do that!

Always thought it was ironic, but what do I know, I'm basically a newbie...

I put it on my forehead, but facing BACKWARD (with my strap to the front) while finishing getting kitted up...saves it from getting stepped on!!!

My instructor also did the splashing thing, if someone put their mask on their forehead. I suppose a distressed diver would push their mask up to their forehead, as that seems to be most peoples instinct.

I think it is more important so you dont lose your mask. I usually just put mine around my neck when im done with it.

You have your forehead stepped on while gearing up often, do ya?

Thats cute, really just like the rest have said around the neck so you dont lose it. I had to watch a diver chase a DMs mask that was kept backwards on her forehead. All it takes is one nice wave and there goes.

Dantastic:

Mine knocked a few off peoples heads! This was after a few warnings, he made his point.
