As an experienced safty diver (the ex-commercial diver carrying the contents of a tool chest for weight and twin tanks) I have taken to carrying something for emergency situations similar to this that I like to call a "meat hook". A meat hook is just a carabiener braided into about 3 feet of rope and attached to a lower d-ring. You then hook this on to the other diver, and haul him out of where he is if you are in a situation where you have to use both your hands to do an extraction. You do not want to assend like this if you can possibly avoid it, but it could come in handy.

As a side note, I've never had to actually use this on another diver, and hope I never have to. But there are situations where this would be highly useful.
