Have a Thai g/friend who i introduced to diving, tank is nearly as big a she is, LOL, anyway bought her wet suit fins ect, got the mask at the shop , fitted fine, so on the first dive, after we surfaced she said she had trouble equalizing due to the fact she couldnt pinch her nose(being so small) the things you never think of when you buy a mask hey? does any one know of a brand that has a smaller nose portion ??

I'll probably get fried for this, but here goes . . .

Check out some of the mask/snorkel/fin packages in the local Wal-Mar or K-Mart (if they have that sort of thing in Laos).

For the longest kind of time, the only mask I could find to fit my wife came from one of those little snorkel packages.

thanks for that will check out when i get into bangkok.

Zed3,

Until I get a nose job, I am stuck with a flat nose as well. When I first started, I found it difficult to squeeze my nose to equalize because the nose part of the mask was too large. I eventually found that push in on the nose part then squeezing made equalizing possible.

PS - I was only kidding about the nose job.

Have her try on a frameless Shadow Mini. It's made for smaller faces, low volume with glass close to the face, no frame to reach under, and the nose pocket seems very thin and flexible.

I second what reefuge posted- I must have been bored one day, but I found I could equalize by putting a finger sideways under my nose (finger as fake mustache gesture) or by pressing two fingertips under my nose (double nose pick :D). Both "techniques" press the mask skirt up against the nostrils and form a tight enough seal to equalize. Your GF can try this on dry land- she'll feel it in her ears if it's working.

Since her current mask fits well, another approach would be to learn passive methods of equalizing, such as swallowing, jaw-thrust, suppressed yawn, etc.
