I'm looking at masks, and I'm finding that none of them seal well to my face in the shop. I have a mustache that is the culprit, and really don't want to shave it off just to dive. I have been told that if you press a mask to your face and hold your breath, a mask should stay on your face without a strap. Is someone pulling my leg, or is this true. Is there a product that I can put on the mask or my mustache that will help it seal better, or doesn't it really make a difference once you're in the water?

A well fitting mask will stay on your face if you inhale through your nose, creating a vacuum.

Try trimming just beneath your nose to expose a small amount of lip above the mustache. I've heard some folk will put lubricant on the mustache to help with the seal.

As a mustachio for years my suggestions would be as follows;
1. Learn to clear a lot (benefit-less fogging).
2 Chapstick or vaseline or catcrap in your nasal follicular protein extensions. (Just kidding- don't do it!)
3. Shave that puppy! (Again, don't do it)
4. I've recently found the Atomic Aquatics Frameless to be more leakfree than others as far as the stache is concerned. Don't get it with a clear skirt. It will yellow. Black skirt is the way to go.

I go with simskiscuba - learn to clear a lot. I wear a hydrooptix mask, and seem to get a pretty good seal until the 'stach gets out of control. Seems that keeping the mask up close to the nose helps a lot.

I fwording love my aquatics! It did infact even work when I had my stache. Now why did I do that nr 3 again??
Poor sucker that sold it to me for half price after only a few dives because it didnt fit him too well :D

I'd shave the stache. They are so 70's porn starish.

I wore one for 20 years. Didn't shave it until it began annoying my infant daughter. People around me said thank God. We didn't want to say ......But now you look younger and much better. My brother finally shaved his last year. His girlfriend said thank God. You look younger and mucho better.

In the early 80's people said I looked like Sam Houstan and my brother like Thomas Magnum. Well it was the 80's. People thought Rick Roll's mediocre sound was music.

Me, 60's and Pancho Villa. 'Stache stays.

-On second thought, it is the new millenium. How about shaving it and replacing it with a tat?

I've found that trimming my 'stache short helps a lot. I still have to clear my mask a little more often than others however. Using vaseline or similar gunk to help make the seal did not work for me.
