I haven't been to either YET! Philadelphia Quarry is a few miles north of Athens (Loch Low Minn) quarry which is fairly decent. I 've heard alot of good things about Martha's and Philly. Philly does NOT have airfills so that's a minus. Temp and vis is usually OK, so I've heard and read. The links Land Locked provided look good. I will definitely have to check those out someday.

Martha's quarry in pennsylvania? I'm guessing you're talkin about a different one. I used to go cliff diving out at martha's quarry in high school. Definately wasn't a scuba site then.

Little off subject, but someone mentioned it, how far away from clarksville tn is pennyroyal? I keep hearing people talk about it but haven't been. Only been to cerulean.

Beachjunkie, I frequent Pennyroyal. It is only about an hour & 15 minutes from Owensboro. If you're ever going that way & I'm off from work (I work 2 out of 5 weekends), feel free to look me up. You may also want to check out the link in my signature. It is for divers from IN, KY, IL, TN & OH. We have adopted Pennyroyal as our home base.

Back on subject,.... Clarksville is only about 30 mi south of Pennyroyal. Pennyroyal is at the north of Hopkinsville. Just off of Pennyroyal Parkway at exit #9. From the south, get off of the parkway, turn right & the quarry will be the next right almost immediately after you get off the exit ramp.

I assumed Martha's quarry between Nashville and Knoxville.
Philadelphia quarry between Knoxville and Chattanooga.

Was in my LDS yesterday,
Martha's vis is down to about 5 ft.
Whats the latest vis at Pennyroyal ?

Hi, guys!
My buddy Jump Boy and I didn't make it to TN to Martha's or Philadelphia, it was just too far to drive, so we drove to Mermet Springs near Metropolis, IL. Dove there Tuesday, then headed on down to spend the night in Hopkinsville. Got up, went to Penny Royal Wednesday... it was basically deserted--we were the only divers there. In the shallower parts, where all the attractions are, the viz in some spots was less than a foot. According to the guy in the office, the treasure hunt a couple of weeks ago really stirred things up and it hasn't settled yet. In the deeper areas, the viz wasn't bad at all but nothing like the 80 ft. I saw last year at the end of August. It was still a great diving day; we did 3 dives and had a ball. Temp. shallows was pretty good, but if you go deep, get ready--it's about 50º! Then yesterday morning, after staying overnight in Hopkinsville again, we went back another hour and 15 minutes to dive Mermet AGAIN before returning to Indiana.

Mermet had the same viz problem although not to the degree of PR. It seems that the shallower parts were about 5-10, and about 15-20 in the deeper areas like near the train car. We got to 68 ft., it was about 45º... you can feel a thermocline around 18 ft, and another one again right around 38ft, if I remember correctly.

Never having been to Mermet, I had a blast... I can't wait to go back there, even if it is a 4 hour drive from my house. Unfortunately, there has been some vandalism there recently: somebody used one of the cement animals from the petting zoo to break out the glass in the phone booth. I don't get that: we pay to go dive there, so why vandalize it?

The huge catfish were great fun, too, I've never seen such big cats!! Awesome!!

Also, during our first dive, when we descended, there was music playing underwater. I'd never heard that before during a dive, at first I was kinda thinking "can't we escape noise at all, even underwater?" but then as we got deep in to the murkier, colder part, I could still hear it and it was kind of nice, it made it seem "normal" and not creepy.

TGIF!!
