What!!! :11:  :11:

I don't see anything on their site. Any confirmation on this?

Yup. They are up to $30.

There as another thread here saying that Fred (owner operator) was giving the additional $10 bucks to an orphanage though, so it appears its going to a "good cause".

You can still get in for $20 bucks though, but you have to pre-purchase a "ticket" from any local Nashville area dive shop. But it was also stated that they often run out of these, so call ahead first before driving down to see who's got them. Of course itmight not be worth the hassle to find a shop with them if you're driving from out of state.

What!!!

They haven't updated their site in years...

Coming from out of state, I think I'll go to Mermet instead,
Glenn runs the best operation, bar none! And for now he only charges $20.

I'm all for charitable contributions, but making other people pay your
contributions??? I wonder what the IRS would think? As a diver paying
a $10 donation on his behalf, who legally takes the deduction?

Where is this place at? I haven't heard of Martha's before.

David, Marthas is just outside Nashville. On the east side near Lebanon, TN.

Here is their website, though it hasn't been updated in years and doesn't have much usefull info on it.

They are having their Annual Treasure Hunt this upcomging weekend. Lot of free prizes I'm told.

Land Locked. As for who takes the donation per IRS rules? I dunno... I haven't been there since he started this. I'm sure you could ask Fred (the owner) about it. If I went, I don't think I'd get too worried about it for a one time trip. It's worth visiting once, even if it costs $10 more than othe places. Buildings are neat to swim through underwater.

While that price seems a little high, some of the Florida springs have been charging that much. Vortex recently upped their rates to $32/day.

Other rates for comparison:
Madison Quarry near Huntsville charges $20 (tax included)
Moulton Quarry charges $15.
Diveland (Glencoe) near gasden charges $20
Bluewater (B'ham) charges $18 (I think. their website doesn't say)
Cerulean (KY) charges $20
Low Loch Minn (TN) $20

I admit I was shocked at the Fla spring diving costs this last February.

Most quarry diving is $10-$20, some have better facilities than others.
$30 for a quarry dive with $10 of that going to charity?

I've attended many a charity event, if the costs are split then it is advertised
up front on what your deductible costs are. If I knew up front that $10 of my
entry fee was going to charity at my local haunt, I would be taking a $400
deduction on my taxes. It sounds like this is an unreasonable attempt by someone
to support a charity through others without disclosure or an opt-out option.
Why should I be penalized for his charitable contributions for just visiting from
out of state, not by visiting through a local shop with an opt-out option?
Is there an opt-out for visitors? Make sense?

There is an opt-out for everyone. you can buy a "ticket" for Martha's at any Nashville LDS for $20 bucks still.

I think that Fred disclose's what he's doing. he openingly says he's giving the money to an orphanage. FYI... I think it's an Orphanage in Saigon (or formally Saigon, now Ho Chi Min City).

the extra $10 bucks isn't really enough to keep you from viisting at least once is it? even if it's for a decent cause? I'd rather spend an extra $10 bucks and dive at Marthas as opposed to paying $32 for Vortex and having 400 divers in a hole that is only 200 feet across. (yes I've seen it that crowded there. They even made the news that over 4th of July weekend, Vortex got over 10,000 visitors, although most of them swimmers).

Give Fred a call if you've got questions about it. I'm sure he'll tell you all about it.

I know what you mean about crowded! I came up with a new CESA
down there. It is called the Spider Man CESA, inflate your BC, go to
the ceiling and crawl your way out!
