Hi all,

I was curious if anyone had recommendations for types of markers for putting an ID mark on dive gear. Black markers work okay for things like yellow fins, but for dark stuff like BC's, a fluorescent marker really doesn't work. I'd like to use something similar to white-out, but I'm worried about the solvent weakening BC material.

Any ideas?

I have a white paint pen I use on dark stuff and it lasts a long time. If you're worried about solvents on a BC, mark a pocket or flap if you've got one, rather than a bladder area.

I mostly boat dive, and until I went DIR, we all had the same gear. I put my name on my fins, BC, Tanks, boots, drysuit - basically everything. They last and last, and when they wear, I simply re-mark. Yellow, White, Blue - They're the best.

The only marks you can see when diving are my name on my fin bottom and on the top of my tank. Everything else is marked on the inside.

I use the metallic Sharpie permanent pens. They show up very well on the black gear (Bc, booties, gloves, etc...) and last - so far I've got approx. 40 dives with my gear marked, and my name is still clear.
The DAN tags are a good idea as well, since then your DAN insurance info is readily available should you need to use it and not be in the condition to inform othrs where to find that info.

Sanford uniPaint markers. They come in a six pack of multiple colors, so you can pick one that contrasts well against your gear. Periodically you'll need to re-ink the markings, but that's not a big deal. I've been using them for years and haven't noticed any problems with the paint/solvent damaging any of the materials I've applied them to.

I just went to a local stamp store and had some "dog tags" made with my name and address and attach to bcd, pony and regs with zip ties.....magic mark the other stuff.

If you go to an art supply shop, they sell Paint Markers which work great. They come in white, which marks black gear very well. Of course, they have a dozen other colors so you can contrast most any color gear you have.

Our club got a load of letters made up on small plastic rings, sort of like the things you'd get out of a label maker. We then used cable ties to tie our initials to our kits. Very similar to the dog tags idea above but the rings were a lot smaller.
