Hello,
I know this issue has been mentioned before but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to my question, which is:

Am I OK to change the battery myself?

OK I know it depends on what definition of OK you use, but I'm quite capable of unscrewing the back, replacing the battery, making sure the little gasket is properly positioned (they give you a spare when you buy it as well, doesn't that imply self-replacement?) and screwing the back back on. In fact I would probably do this with a lot more care than some people in an authorised dealership. Is there anyone who has one (mine's a Nemo Steel) & has changed their battery & if so, with what results?
If it's of interest, I've had it since last August, it seems for a while now to have filled up the memory with 45 hours of diving on it, so now when I dive the earliest is pushed out of the memory to make room for the latest (I think). I have never fully powered it down, which you can do to conserve the battery (good if you don't dive regularly or use it as a watch). I rarely use the back light, never use the alarm.
It still has nearly 3/4 of the battery remaining, which I think is pretty good. The free dive function I use a lot as well & it has a nice weight & look to it. I do a lot of diving & I haven't had any problems with its use of the RGBM algorithm, in fact it is usually very similar to the usual suspects for both deco & non deco (not that I do very much deco though). Apart from one Dive Rite computer that was very frighteningly liberal that is!

Overall I love it...

Thanks in anticipation of any replies & am also interested in others experiences with this computer,
David.
(I am not about to take up trainspotting by the way...)

David,

The type of computer you got and what I have (D6 Suunto) it is better to have the company do it all for you. Especially if you still got good warranty on it. They'll fix it all for you. Like you my D6 I can also unscrew the back plate and chage out the battery but, what about the o-ring? The big question would be what size is the o-ring and how thick (for my computer)? I personally like to send it back to the company and have them do it. What good is the warranty if I don't use it.

Most computers do "refresh" the logbook. My computers (D6 and Gekko) has all been "refreshed" to make room for the next dive. Like your computer, my D6 can be turned off from dive mode to conserve battery power. I do use the alarms a little but the light is very rare (I let the Gekko do all the extra work. Nice thing about the Gekko is that the light has to be charged by your torch instead of a actual backlight).

On a seperate note I've seen some winners here and try to change the battery out on their computers i.e.(Mosquito, Atom, Gekko etc.) and come back all messed up. The big thing they DON'T do is change the o-ring. I've seen stripped covers (they would take a screwdriver instead of a quarter to open it and close it as tight as they can) and flattened o-rings because of not listening to the LDS and try to put the blame on them and ask for a refund. Makes me laugh.

Hope this helps.
