On the recommendation of my LDS (who sells both Mares and Cressi) I went with the Cressi-Sub J-115. It's similar to the Morphos, but the deflator is manual, not pneumatic. I really like it.

One of the determining factors for me was the customer service issue. My LDS has had problems with Mares and customer service, getting parts, etc. They have no such issues with Cressi. Since I'd be having any necessary service done at my LDS, I went with their recommendation.

Both seem like they fit the bill if you want great fine control with inflation/delfation and don't want the hanging hose.

OK, from what I understand the Morphos Twin is an upgrade to the Morphos with heavier material and an additional pneumatic exhaust port (PEP).

Morphos=1 PEP Top of airshell; 3 manual dumps (1 manual dump is incorporated in the top pneumatic. 3 dumps total.

Morphos Twin = 2 PEP 1 Top, 1 bottom; 2 manual dumps (1 manual dump is incorporated in the top pneumatic. 3 dumps total.

I was told the the Twin was not to be sold in the US, but I know you can get them here. There is however a subtantial cost increase for the twin. Don't really think it's worth it for the slight differences. MercutioATC, does have a point about parts with certain dealers. However, I am close to NYC and do not have that problem.

I am thoroughly enjoying my Morphos. Very simple to use and very light for travel. Excellent bouyancy control and comfortable on the surface. All I need.

Hope this helps.

It does weigh less. Granted, I'm usually hauling it around with the weight pockets in, but even without, the Cressi-Sub J-115 does weigh a bit and is bulkier than the Morphos.

ddid once bubbled...
that was the best price I could find in NY

Careful here. LP doesn't sell the Twin, but the plain Morphos for $399.00. The cheapest price I could find for the Twin was $465.00 from DiveInn.

I'm looking into the Air Trim system myself - just wondering, with Morphos, now that they have Manual Dumps, does it mean the worry of Pneumatic dumps have been resolved? My understanding is the big worry was with Pneumatic, you have to have tank pressure to dump air, now that Morphos has Manual dump, the problem is solved, right? Or am I misinterpreting the issue here?

Also, any opinion on Dacor Air Trim?

I do like the Cocoon (folds into a small pack) or Morphos though

Diver,

Not sure I understand you statement, but the Morphos has always had manual dumps. The Morphos has 1 pneumatic and 2 manual dumps. The Morphos Twin has 2 pneumatic and 1 manual dump. The Morphos has now been replaced by the Morphos Pro (all metal D rings now, instead of 50%m/50%p).

You are correct when you say that you need air to dump air. But you need air to breathe, so you should not be running out :) That was not the problem.

I think that is was more not trusting a new gadget from Mares. I have been using mine now for 1.5 years and have no complaints. Easy to use, great to travel with and easy to maintain. I love the small back mounted wing with the side bags to give you a comfortable feeling on the surface and streamlined in the water.

Since Mares owns Dacor, the Dacor Air Trim is the same as the Mares line. For a variation on the airtrim, look into the Cressi J series with Flight control. No pneumatic issues at all, but the control stick may be. Take a look.

However, let me say that I only recommend these BCs as recreational diving BCs. If you are doing anything else (Tec, Cave, etc.), then this is not the tool to use. Go BP/W.

Good luck in your search. No mater what you choose, dive smart, dive safe.

Enjoy the ride
