I am looking to buy my first BCD. I always travel to dive and do no cold water diving at the moment and want to get an easily packable (preferably into a carry on), weight integrated, light, back inflate BCD.

I was almost ready to pull the trigger on Mares Icon due to easily foldable Quick-pack design, great reviews of the BC and my local shop recommendations. Then I decided to check on SB and elsewhere and quickly learned about a potential design flaw of the weight intergration MRS+ system - it seems there are hundreds of reports of people loosing weight pockets brushing against something at the bottom or even upon water entry. Concerned about this I decided to see what else is there and ended up looking at Scubapro Knighthawk and Zeagle Stiletto at a different shop. Knighthawk has a rigid plastic backplate and I would not say that packing-wise its in the same category as the other BCDs so I dismissed it as soon as I looked at it.

Zeagle rip-cord weight system, although more complicated looks like a safer approach - at least there should be no accidental release of the weights no matter what position you're in and since dropping the weight isn't something you do every other day re-threading the cord procedure isn't that big of a deal. Prices for both BCDs appear to be within the same range. Otherwise, I liked the construction of the Stiletto and the fact that it comes with waist band and double tank bands but I thought it was lacking back padding and I was not so sure about all the plastic bolts and grommets all around the inside of the BCD as I read some reports indicating that those cause piling/fraying of the wetsuit and can be generally annoying.

Can those diving with MRS+ (which seems to be an upgrade of the first generation MRS system) please comment on your recent experience using this system? I am also interested in experiences of other divers traveling with either one of these or other travel-compatible BCDs. Thanks.

PS. And no, I am not interested in BP/W configuration at this time.

I just purchased for myself a Mares Icon. Took it diving last weekend and absolutely love it, felt extremely comfortable and had no issues at all with it. I have only used it on 4 dives so far so i might not be the best to compare but so far i have no complaints with the bc. As for the cummerbund not being used on the icon i actually prefer this, my last back inflation BC (Oceanic Excursion) i removed the cummerbund and found that diving was more comfortable.

I wonder if MRS problems have been quietly fixed bythe company in the latest generation of the BCDs - most of the lost weight pocket reports that I went over dated as far back as 2005 and were not Icon specific. As far as I understand Mares never admitted this problem.

I'm not sure about 'hundreds' of reports of people losing weights. I bought a Mares Icon recently and I can't see how the weight pockets could fall out from just brushing against something - they seem perfectly secure and need a reasonable (though not excessive) amount of force to remove.

This leads me to conclude that either a) it was indeed a design flaw that has been resolved; or b) it was a bit of the standard collective hysteria that Scubaboard specialises in. Mares MRS weight pockets fall out and you'll die...split fins don't require proper technique which means you'll die...bp/w are far superior to jacket BCs and if you don't use one you'll die...etc. etc.

This one is a tough call for me, as we sell both products. For me personally, I find the Zeagle Stiletto bcd to be far and away one of the most comfortable bcds I've ever used. It has plenty of lift for my diving here in California and felt perfect without a suit in the Caribbean.

The reason it has 2 cylinder bands is because of the soft pack design. This also makes is pack and stow for travel better than the hardpack design. The weight system on either is a bit of a non-issue. Both are safe and secure. If for some reason you find yourself re-stringing the Zeagle it is pretty easy and quick to accomplish.

Anyone here travels with Zeagle Stiletto? Can you fit it in a carry on and have some space left? I think I'm adding Oceanic Excursion, Aeris Atmos, Aeris 5 Oceans and Zeagle Stiletto (or LTD) into the mix.

I thought of also adding Aqualung Balance but after trying it on last night at a local shop I know I would not be happy with that choice (it seemed to lack back padding so that I felt the back plate in my spine). I also tried on SP Nighthawk at a store - I felt like that bladder could benefit from some bungees on the sides and it was a tad heavy for travel.

Any reviews of the above BCDs are welcome.
