Yes kiddies, it is me again with more questions about Fiji.
Want to see manta rays, and would appreciate any real-life opinions about Mantaray Island Resort on Yasawa.
Also,...any other destinations around FiJi for manta scuba dives.
Thank you in advance for responding.

Hi. At Manta Ray you will most probably get to see Mantas. but not dive with them. Snorkeling only. The resort is backpacker style, last time I visited, wiht ok buffet meal food and shared facilities. You will find Manta dives on Kadavu, most notably Matava resort. Mantas are quite common but not predictable other than a few areas.

Well, thanks for that little tidbit of information...I certainly do not want to travel all the way to Fiji and be restricted to snorkel diving with mantas ! Is this a common restriction at Fiji land-based (resort) dive ops ?

Not really, but unless it has changed, the area where Mantas are regularly sighted in the Yasawa islands, is not suitable for diving. It may also be that the operators feel divers might scare the mantas away. Best to check with the resort.

Very good advice. How about Yasawa ?

I'm trying to do my "due diligence" via Google searches, but these first-hand accounts are really priceless.

Generally not a top dive destination. OK if you are there anyway. Look at Beqa, Wananavu, Volivoli, Kadavu, Taveuni

Hi, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about swimming with the manta rays in the Yasawas Fiji. Diving is not allowed with the manta rays, the channel is fairly shallow in places and the current is strong at times. Our guests are picked up by the boat and dropped off at the top of the channel as required. Getting too close to the manta rays does scare them and they're close enough without the need for a tank. I've personally had them swim right by me. Cheers Bel

have a look at Ono island in Kadavu, I was there 4 years ago and we could snorkel with the mantas every day if we wanted to. The diving is pretty good if the mantas don't show. You can ask to use scuba if you want but snorkeling gets you just as close, as it is up to the manta as to how close they get - they move way faster than you do. Your best option is to position yourself in their path and stop blowing bubbles and hope they keep coming! best of luck.
ps cleaning stations are a different story - have a look at Yap and Lady Musgrove Island, GBR Aust
