Labuan Bajo, December 22, 2024 – A fire broke out on the Maluku Explorer (formerly Liburan Paradise) ship while undergoing repairs in the waters of Labuan Bajo on Sunday evening (December 22, 2024) at around 20:00 WIT. The ship has been anchored at the West Pulau Monyet Anchorage since July 15, 2024, and has not been operational as it is still undergoing renovation.

The preliminary cause of the fire is suspected to be welding work being carried out by the ship's technicians. Fortunately, there were no casualties or environmental pollution resulting from the incident. The ship had no passengers onboard, and all crew members/technicians on the vessel were successfully evacuated without harm.

In response, a joint Emergency Team consisting of KSOP, BASARNAS, and SATPOLAIR POLRES MABAR was quickly deployed to assist in the evacuation and firefighting efforts. National ships and vessels docked in the vicinity also joined in the firefighting efforts, with radio coordination assisting in expediting the fire control.

Authorities have stated that the firefighting process was successful and the fire was contained without further damage. All technicians and crew members who were evacuated are reported to be in good health and unharmed.

The teams involved in handling this incident:

  • KSOP Labuan Bajo: 4 personnel
  • BASARNAS: 4 personnel
  • SATPOLAIR POLRES MABAR: 4 personnel
  • SATPOLAIR POLDA NTT: 4 personnel
  • AL: 2 personnel
  • KNP. Chundamani: 4 personnel
Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the fire and will provide further updates on subsequent actions.
