DandyDon, I have to differ with you about how hard a blood substitute is being searched for. One of my friends and colleagues at the University of Washington has been involved in blood substitute research -- It's an active area. It's just not very successful. Trying to find something that carries as much oxygen as hemoglobin does AND will unload it to tissues AND doesn't excite an immune or clotting response AND will store AND is cheap enough to be practical has not been an easy challenge to meet.
There would be ENORMOUS profit for a company that could successful develop and manufacture a blood substitute. Don't think for a minute it isn't being actively studied.
