Well, after much thought and research I've decided to go with the Mako rubber belt. Has anyone used the Tin Man pinch weights yet? They look pretty good, but I'm concerned about the square shape of the weight rubbing against my wet/drysuit as opposed to the traditional weight style where only the belt contacts the suit. Also, how large a profile do those pinch weights have? Will they interfere with other gear? It looks like they stick up a bit.

Any thoughts?

You may want to check the Spearo boards for recommendations since Mako's market is primarily Spearfisherman.

I'm using the Mako rubber belt with the uncoated Tinman weights, and find it perfect for scuba. The Mako belt prevents any slippage when worn over my Fusion drysuit. Whereas my fabric pocketed weight belt was constantly slipping on the slick Fusion suit even with a depth-compensating buckle.

I'm wearing 16# of Tinman weights, four blocks on each side, no weights in the back. I wanted the back free of weights to avoid hitting the backplate and to provide more rubber in contact with my suit. The weights measure 3"h x 1.25"d x 1.5"w, and they can fit together almost touching each other on the belt. So a block of 4 is only 6.5" wide over each hip. Each weight extends 1/2" above and below the belt, and I have noticed no interference anywhere with other equipment.

The squeeze feature of the weights works beautifully and the weights can shifted around very quickly and easily and never move once located.

The tail of the belt has to be left long enough to easily grip when you want to release the belt, so the tail is longer than with a traditional buckle release. I just tuck the loose tail back under the belt which leaves a loop to grab.

No complaints at all with the Mako setup. Works perfectly with my Fusion drysuit and BP&W. I've tried a few weight belts over the years and this is my favorite by far.

Nice. I just ordered the Mako with 12# of weight, planning to wear the rest of my weight in the weight pockets of the Ranger. When you say 1/2" above and below, I assume you are talking about the length of the weight, perpendicular to the belt. I'm mostly curious how much of the weight's thickness is positioned between the belt and your drysuit? Also, how sharp are the corners? You haven't noticed any abrasions on your suit? Sounds like I made the right decision so far. Thanks!

I mean the vertical height of the weight. There is 1/2" of weight above the belt (towards head) and 1/2" of weight below the belt (towards feet). There's about 3/16" of weight between belt and drysuit.

Corners are beveled and I haven't noticed any abrasion to the suit.

Perfect, thanks!

So here's a silly question, and I had wondered this before ordering. How do you initially get the pinch weights on?

Never mind, my shears figured it out.
