i have the book iin my hot little hand so pm me your address and i'll pop it in the mail tomorrow.... its actually a really good book. i cannot think of a single item it hasnt covered so hopefully you can get some use out of it!

MeiLing.... im not on any medication for my lack of thyroid - last checked about 4months ago and doing ok. i do take iron tables and a womans multi vitamin every day. ive been loosing my weight with sureslim and that involves a blood test and a list of things that i need to avoid according to the blood tests. on my SS forum we have compared lists and there are differences in peoples diet.

some info:

Limit consumption of alcohol, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, peaches, pears, radishes, spinach and turnips because these foods suppress thyroid function.

i know prawns are good for iodine levels but not for my body type apparently

It felt really nice :D Totally out of the blue, I would never have thought she'd notice or say anything.

And some of them aren't so crash hot for our underwater environment either. We have one of the biggest prawning fleets here and I won't eat local prawns coz I see the damage they do to the bottom of the Gulf - right through where I like to dive!

I don't do the mud bugs of any sort. They don't sit well with my digestion, to put it mildly!

Grave's is HYPERthryroidism, right? I'm HYPO! I guess I was confused, I think.

yep - bad enough to get some sort of illness but to have it called "graves" disease!

Graves' Disease, is an autoimmune disorder which causes hyperthyroid symptoms (overactive thyroid) and is one of the commonest causes of thyroid disease.

Graves' disease tends to run in families and is triggered by the immune system producing antibodies which stimulate the thyroid gland to increase in size and produce excessive quantities of thyroid hormone. Thyroid Eye Disease can be associated with Graves' Disease.

Treatments for Graves include, anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine and surgery

i had the meds for a while, then the choice was between radioactive iodine or surgery and i chose surgery

For tracking calories, check out sparkpeople.com. They'll give you a recommend range base on your goals. The database of foods is large, plus you can add new foods and calculate the nutritional value of recipes. Also gives you a place to track how many calories you are burning with exercise. And it's free.

I'm in the thyroid crew too...on synthroid, but still gaining weight even with limiting myself to 1500-1700 calories a day and doing lots of walking. I found that to loose weight, I have to really watch my diet and do heavy exercise 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a time, 4-5 times a week. With working full time and other commitments, that's just not practical. I'm on synthroid right now, and even thought my tests put me in the normal range, the symptoms are still there. Searching for a doctor that'll actually take the time to treat the symptoms and not just tell me it's my lifestyle....1500 calories a day, wanting to sleep 10+ hours a day...moody as all get up..thinning hair.. and it's my lifestyle? Right....

I'm currently reading The Thyroid Diet. It's an easy read and so far has detailed foods to stay away from that effect the thyroid, supplements that may help, etc. I haven't gotten far enough yet, but it does contain some sample diet plans to try if one has thyroid problems.

i was really lucky.... after struggling with something wrong with me for months i finally went to the docs and he diagnosed me correctly in about 5mins

turns out when he was working in a hospital many years ago, before becoming a GP, he's field was.... ta dahhhhhh - graves disease!!!!

i was so seriously lucky. he used his contacts, phoned the specialist to get me to see a doc in about a week who took care of me till i was ready for surgery. then, the surgery was performed by one of the US best docs who was in australia for a conference and beamed live on webcam & filmed :)

i hope the book gives you some help and keep looking till you find a sympathic doc to your needs - dont let them gloss over your symptoms

oh, also forgot to mention... after surgery i developed a slight (temporary) side affect.

basically you touch my cheek and my entire face did this elvis thing with my lip.... very bizzare

story time....

when i came thru from the surgery there was a student doctor there who said "i know im not allowed to bother Dr ??? (cant even remember his name!) but everyone else has someone and youre the only one left"

i promptly threw up on the guy - as i do when i come out of general anistetic :D and he ran away

the next day he came back and i thought i would take pity on the kid (well i did throw up on him) and let him use me as his student patient for his lecturer

so when they discovered my elvis thing and i told him about it he was super super excited

the day after that.... he and his lecturer are at my door. apparently the lecturer had read about the condition and even he never seen it before and he was super excited

and then i noticed a line of about 10 students outside my door... all wanting to touch my check to see my elvis tick

TOTALLY BIZZARE!

wow - looking at the book Alcina

1 large bunch of grapes is 300 calories! yikes

a can of normal coke is only 160 calories

Grapes are VERY sugary. Ditto most fruits except like apples, pears and grapefruits. The berries are in the mid-range category. All should be eaten in moderation.

Vegetables are a much better source of vitamins and minerals with fewer calories.

One of the most prevalent theories in dieting nowadays is that too much sugar/carbohyrdrates from any source are bad. Complex carbs are better because they metabolize slower.

South Beach diet or the Glycemic Index diets are of that theory.

And a serving of grapes is 10 only. Not a large bunch.
