.. You do not HAVE to have a computer just a bottom timer AND a back-up timer. Personally, I think a computer is a nice back-up to my deco tables, so I encourage you to at least think about one in the future. I don't think it makes you sloppy....
I agree with this. I was very much in the camp of 'you can do everything with BT's', computers make you lazy/sloppy'. But after doing some deep caves on mix and talking and thinking about things.... I bought a multigas computer anyway.

Right now it runs as a back up to my tables, but more and more I am thinking to run it as primary since the profiles in a cave are soooo dynamic. Of course in ocean diving you can plan things a bit better in terms of the profile.

The best advise I had in diving was:
Think about what you want to do and find the tools to do it. Don't just do things because others do it, think about why you want to do it that way (or not)

You do not need a computer to dive. Although they are very nice. I like the D9 but not the price tag. I would go with the DR Duo. But if you are getting into trimix, then that computer isn't worth a flip. Then you need to strive for a trimix computer if you want a computer that will handle all of your diving capabilities

The current choices in trimix computers are really very limited.

HS Explorer: $1200 retail.RGBM.Probably the computer I would get if I bought one today.

VR3: Get the trimix version with color screen and VPM algorithm and you are looking at around $2000.Too rich for me

Nitek He: Inexpensive $550?? Very outdated algorithm

Cochran: Would not touch one with a very long stick due to to many horror stories.Lose a deco gas for whatever reason then tough. The computer can not cope with that.

Any manufacturer that makes a reliable trimix computer with a bubble algorithm ,ability to use at least 3 gases,AND does it for less than $1000 will corner the market.

New computers from Dive Rite and Liquivision http://www.liquivision.ca/ sound interesting.

Tec will not be inexpensive,

I totally disagree with you in that statement.

Are you a shop monkey who can get a free boat ride or any other perks? Do you live nearby coast and cave country?

Otherwise, tech isn't cheap at all..

Edit: I mis-read Colliam7.. Sorry............ Must need more coffee....

I don't think his double negative didn't confused you.

"Tec will NOT be inexpesive"

Blitz:
save the money and buy two bottom timers. Relying on a pc when diving He isn't a good idea.

Just get 2 Dive Rite Duos and run them in GAGE mode....then you have the best of both worlds for not alot more $.

Why get two DR Duos when you could get two separate brands running two separate algorithms? After hearing some nice stories about the He, I'd stick to one of the Duos and grab another brand. Or just jump to the VR3 so you can run backup tables on mixes.

I don't think you wouldn't have been doing him a disservice by failing to point that out. :D
