One of the things your instructor should tell you is that there are dive clubs or other local groups of divers who will welcome new divers. Likely they will suggest you get involved. Take that advice and do some dives with someone who is not diving for the first time in years. Then invite your buddy to join you on one of the group's dives.

You might also ask him if his gear has been serviced within the last year. It absolutly will need service if it's been stored for five years.

A lot depends on how much diving he did in the past. Did he do 500 dives and quite a few classes in those years or only a few vacation dives each year? If the later you need to worry even more.

Alright I've posted here a couple times but haven't taken the plunge. But I am signing up for a weekend course (actually 2 weekends and a day class) to get certified. My friend was certified when he was 13 (now 26) and hasn't dove in maybe 5 years. After I get my C-card he wants to get diving again (with me as a buddy) The only thing is, is that he said "yeah I remember most of the stuff, just not dive tables, everything else is common sense." Now I only plan on doing some really easy stuff for awhile until I get more money (which means more dives and exp.). But he doesn't really have the cash for a refresher course. I have all my student books, videos, and such and he just wants to re-read, and watch everything again and go diving in a pool first to "relearn" and then off diving. Should I make him take a course or is there some other way (cheaper) for him to get back into diving safely?

Thoughts?

jeffreyd Ok well hes being a little difficult but I think I made an impression.
Hey just remember do not start having ill fated feelings toward your buddy because of what you have read here. He has been made out to be a bit of trouble and as if he has no knowledge at all. That may not be true and DO NOT start thinking that your buddy is going to be a liability to you that will ruin your dives with him. He is not different then most. Almost everybody who has fallen off the wagon thinks they can just jump on in and for some they can. Keep good thoughts going about your buddy or you will constantly question him in your mind while diving instead of just diving. Its your own *** thats on the line on every dive prepare yourself for being able to deal with problems on your own. Rely on yourself and be prepared to help others when they need you.

Glad to hear he is going to take the refresher by the sound of your LDS I would put a bet on the idea the LDS says something like he'll be fine he just needs to have a pool session and all is good. I would have more concerns about your LDS then the buddy.
