I'm headed to Maine in late August / early September and have been trying to figure out how to get in a few days of diving. I've e-mailed the dive shop closest to the rental house (Downeast Diving in Perry), but haven't been able to set anything firm up yet. From what's available online, there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of diving activity in Maine - but that can't possibly be the case.

Any ideas on diving that might be going on in the area? Charters / guided shore diving / local buddies / etc - I don't really care. I'll end up diving the beach off the rental house if I can't set something up, but hoping for better opportunities to discover what Maine diving is all about.

I'm free from August 29th - September 3rd, willing to drive a couple hours if need be, and not above bribery.

Eastport has some amazing diving. If you go past the Waco Diner towards the old factory there is a little beach area on the left. There is a awesome wall dive straight off the beach area. Be sure to do any diving in the area at slack tide because the currents haul a** through there.

If you are in the Bar Harbor area Diver Ed runs a weekly dive charter on Sundays. Our dive club also does a lot of shore diving in the MDI area.

Maine diving is the ultimate NE diving, It has a vast variety of sea creatures that come down from the North and don't make it to MA or RI due to the Cape Cod warmth filter that blocks them. Dive in Maine and you never know what you are going to see. It is full of surprises from my experience at Mt Desert.
