While diving with Trucker Girl a couple days ago, we tried out my magnadoodle at depth. They really do work. I was afraid that it would flood, or just plain not work. I was pleasantly surprised. I had seen some "magnadoodle" like things at the LDS, but at $30, I figured I'd just buy a $6 version at Target and test it.

So for anyone wondering about using a magnadoodle.... they do work!

Of course, I'm not sure how long it will work or hold up, as I've only used it for 1 day so far. ;)

:D

We used to use them.
They did work well and were cheap. But I found them bulky and the magnetic pen corroded after salt water dives. I have removed the plastic housing (Fisher-Price Magna-Doodle) and made a small hole on the plastic card to attach the pen. That was better, but after it got folded a few times, didn’t work too well.
Sometimes we take them on vacations and leave them with the dive masters. They seem to like them, even though we tell them that the pen rusts.
I’ve used it to 100+ fsw.

It was a bit bulky, but it still fits in the pocket of my BC. My hubby put a hole in the plastic housing and attached a big rubber band, and it worked just fine. For the little bit of diving we do... I think it's ok. I never thought about taking it completely out of the housing though. I didn't know that was possible.

Very cool. I think one of my DM's used one for a while but found it too bulky. We just started carrying the low profile QII slate, I think she's gonna try it out.

I found a very little one at Wal-Mart that works nicely. The whole thing is about 4x6 (reminds me of my old Palm Pilot). You can paint the pen with something that is waterproof (nail polish etc..) to help with corrosion. And as stated, for $6 you can afford to leave/lose it.

Aloha, Tim

yeah, while learning, most of my DMs had them. they are great, especially when you are still learning the symbols and stuff. also, when DMs give the briefing before a dive, its impossible to remember all the little species that they talk about, so its nice when they write it out.

I like the one with Nemo on it.

I just bot mine and used it today. Excellent slate!
