So I was reading through some threads about Pony Bottles. I think that has been well discussed. So please don't go there. Anyway, I looked up prices and and noticed the Catalina 40 with Pro Valve is $135 and the Luxfor with K Valve is $200. (no I did not look up the differences in the valves. My first thought was what's up? Aluminum is Aluminum, a valve is a valve.
So anyway, Is there a valid reason why someone would pay 50% more for a Luxfor?

If for sure all you're ever going to be carrying is a single AL40, and aren't worried about resale value, then there's absolutely no reason not to just buy the cheaper bottle.

I can't think of a valid reason for someone to carry a pony. Get a good buddy and save yourself $200

Luxfer ride better when slung than a Catalina. Otherwise no other significant difference other than Luxfer were discontinued for a while and have not been readily available.

I didn't say I was buying, perhaps in the future for other reasons. I did say not to go there because it was beaten to death.:bash:..

Scared Silly does have a valid point though... Thank you. Sounds like it's a slightly better tank with supply line issues. The slightly better sounds to be related to fit and not function.

Not sure where your going there? Let's say your selling a 12yo alum 40 out of hydro. What would the selling price be for each? Why?

Luxfers are preferred as they trim nicer and that makes a difference when you have several tanks sitting on a leash for example, when you rotate them etc.

So technical divers prefer Luxfers for those properties and generally Luxfers have higher resale value. If you plan to head that direction it make sense to buy a luxfer tank now. If all you ever plan todo is to have it as a pony than just save money and get the one that is cheaper.

Thanks elan.
Let's talk 80's. I prefer steel myself but if I were grabbing a 80 for back gas? Would there be a difference in brand?

Do you plan to put it on your back or sling it? If on your back, it really doesn't matter. If used as a stage/deco/pony, the same caveats basically apply: if you are only going to carry one and don't care about resale value, get whichever is cheaper.

Thanks, Personally I will only buy steel for my back. I may in the future think about a deco bottle and it looks like luxfer is the winner. It was really a general question because the pricing looked off and I wanted to know why.
