I've already loosely arranged for rental equipment for this trip because the luggage restrictions seem so tight on these short hop airlines. I am ditching my BCD and reg, but will take the rest. Does anyone have experience with these airlines? I'd be horrified if my gear prevented me from getting on the plane!

I'm diving 3 days with Absolute Scuba in Padang Bai, and 4 days on the liveaboard Lady Denok. Any personal experience with these operators (equipment quality or other) is also certainly appreciated!

May 15 departure, very excited about this first trip to Indonesia!

The iralines should state on their websites what the luggage allowance is. Personally I have flown several times inside Indo on Garuda and twenty five kilos was no problem. The airports in Indonesia and their customer service are getting better and better, IMVHO. The worst thing that can happen is that you will be charged extra , but without a BCD and a regulator you should be well under 20 kgs. If you have a choice of airlines , try to use Garuda. You can book on their website using a foreign credit card.

We dived with Absolute Scuba and they are great. The diving around Padang Bai is far better than most people expect and it’s a very quick hop over to Manta Point or Crystal Bay. I had my own gear , but the rented equipment looked fine.

You will have a wonderful time.

I took full gear when I went DPS to LBJ. No issues. If given the option, prepay for your checked baggage if it’s not included. Much cheaper that way. Carry on is 7kg but if you have camera gear just be proactive and show them while telling them it’s frafile and expensive before they ask to weigh it and they’ll let you carry it on without weighing. :)

Thanks so much for the feedback, particularly about Absolute Scuba. I think going halfway on the gear will work for me, although I love my equipment. Just too messy to haul around this time.

The airlines were clear about limits, but not about excess baggage. I would pay extra, but am fearful of them not allowing my stuff on the plane. I'll learn! This is more of an adventure than most of my solo trips, so help is appreciated.

Outofofficebrb - I've drowned more cameras than most, but I'm going to give it another try since this is probably a once in a lifetime trip for me. I generally carry the camera in my 'personal item' and leave the housing in the luggage. I don't have any fancy accessories, but your advice is well received! Thanks!

Definitely carry on camera, housing, and lenses. IF you have to check anything, I would check the strobes...but ideally, I carry those as well. Have fun!

i flew dps to lbj 6 times since 2008.... with a big bag 25kg for one month vacation and full dive equipment.... and 13kg photographic backpack... no problem at all.... every time except with garuda i pay the overweight for the checked baggage... but in local flights it's really cheap.... ;-)

Hiya
We travel with two sets of dive gear / camera equipment and normally do,the Maldives where we get 30kg (hold) / 7kg (hand) but last year we did our 1st trip to Komodo / Flores with a very much smaller allowance so I can feel your concerns but don’t worry about it too much just be prepared to pay excess luggage, if you have the funds to pay then you won’t be required to leave anything behind.
We trimmed as much as we could without leaving our equipment at home and just paid the excess, we did carry our hand luggage as if it was a light as a feather and put it at my feet whilst hubby put the dive bags on the belt and managed to get away without having our hand luggage weighed - but I strongly think it’s a ploy to make a fast £ as most divers that go that far to dive take their own gear and as we all know dive gear ain’t light!

Enjoy Indonesia and the bubbles....

Precisely! Amazing that we have to play these games, but... I'm an older diver, and I trust them to believe the "lightness" of my carry-on or, at least, be polite enough not to wrestle it away from me!
on my way on the 15th, so I'm in the process of whittling down the luggage, as is always the case... As long as I have my Rx mask all else is good!
