Often used interchangeably from what I've heard.
Low profile specially means close to your face, while low volume means a small amount of air cavity.
I'll go with them being the same thing.

Agree with northernone.
I've never noticed a real difference between low volume or larger masks. I have to purge the mask from time to time anyways. So I never have mask squeeze. I just remember to exhale a few times out of my nose on the way down. No big deal.

There is a real difference between low volume masks and large masks. Agree that in general you need something that fits your face well. However the reason that low volume masks are recommended depending on the type of diving you are doing is that since they are low volume, they clear faster/easier (less volume needed to clear) and they are able to be cleared with one hand instead of two (depending on your clearing technique).
