About 50 yards off the pier between Lovers 1 and Lovers 2 Monday we hit a huge, dense, white cloud of what may have been egg sacs. The sacs had narrow, translucent filaments 4 to 5 cm long with one or more pale yellow nodules 1 to 2 mm in diameter.
Since conditions were stellar (water was like glass, negligible surge) it was possible to navigate back to the dense cloud a few times and find it relatively undispersed.
Any insights into these sacs (or whatever they were) appreciated. Who made them? Could they all have just hatched? Schools of tiny juveniles were in the area. However, I see swarms of juveniles at this site without the spectacular cloud. I'm thinking the presence of the juveniles might potentially have been coincidental.
This was one of the most ethereal and unique experiences of underwater life I have had so far. Reminded me of footage of coral spawning. Todd
