That photo was taken by Peter Lange, who frankly is quickly becoming one of my favorite underwater photographers. I think I might contact him and purchase some of his work... Assuming he sells it.
I don't know Peter personally, and he's not a member of the Lowcountry Scuba Club. The photo was used with permission from the First Degree Underwater Photo Contest which can be found at
http://www.wrecksonline.com . Peter's photo section is at
http://www.wrecksonline.com/2002_20...o_gallery_2.asp?IDPartecipante=277&idlingua=e , and frankly, that photo of the plane isn't his best work... There's even better Peter Lange work there at Wrecks Online.
Specifically, information on that particular picture is at
http://www.wrecksonline.com/2002_2003/photo_gallery/photo_gallery_3.asp?IDImmagine=1677&idlingua=e . If I read that right, the plane is in the Solomon Islands, and is in about 6 meters, or a little less than 20 feet of water. If that's the case, then the surface is likely
just out of the frame of the picture. Ambient light in the picture supports this, although Peter's given an awesome depth-of-field in his photograph, giving the viewer a feeling of tremendous depth in the water column.
...So no, I don't think that this particular dive would be "not for newbies." In fact, it might be ideal for newbies.
