I've been a diver since I was eleven, and had the log book to prove it. I had logged well over 60 dives between the ages of 15 and 18, and remember keeping pretty good records of it as the other divers at my LDS looked out for me pretty well. When my family and I moved to Maine (from SoCal), I gave up the sport -- the only water around was a couple of muddy ponds and shallow rivers, and they were cold. Later I joined the Army, so all my gear stayed with with my family. It was bound to happen that eventually someone, probably a younger cousin, raided my stuff, and I've lost my log book...
Now, my only proof is an SSI cert card saying that I've done '35 or more logged dives'. After my stint in the Army, I ended up in the same area where I grew up, but the LDS I went to has since closed its doors, and I have no way of recovering records from them (even if they kept tank rental records from 15 years ago!).
So, my question is, do I continue my sequencing from 35 -- which is actually what I've done for the last 8 dives, as I feel that this is provable in at least some fasion, even though I still feel completely cheated. Or should I have started from zero? Or from 60? How do I account for the two wreck dives, one of which was on heliox, that I can remember doing? Or the numerous night dives? And even starting from 35, I have no clue what to put down for my accumulated bottom times -- I've thought about averaging it out with 35 minutes X 35 dives (20:25).
I know a dive log is more of a personal item that can be kept almost as a diary, but maybe some of you can offer your insights into difficulties, advantages and alternatives with each solution in the case of someone working toward their DM and/or Instructor status. Thanks in advance!
BTW, just wanted to say that I've been reading through a bunch of the stuff on here; it's a goldmine of a resource that I wished was around when I was doing this as a kid. Keep up the good work!
