Hi Folks

I'm coming to LA from England on the 17 February and I'm looking for some information on diving and acconodation. I'm on my own so the diving would have to be where they don't mind solo divers or where they dive in groups or pair you up.

Any information is greatfully received.

Simon

I recommend a boat dive to the Catalina Islands. Many boads leave the piers in San Pedro and Long Beach. We enjoyed one day, three dives on the Magician (magicianscuba . com) which was fine. You can find more boats/schedules on http://sch.imageg.net/corp/pdf/JanFeb2007.pdf. the Italian gardens and garibaldi reef were both great, I forget the other dive sites. Lots of garibaldi fish, starfish, sheepshead, and saw some leopard sharks!

I recommend staying in Long Beach (the area near the pier in San Pedro is a little shaddy) and suggest making your hotel accomodations soon. They fill up in the Long Beach / San Pedro area when the cruise ships are in town (many people stay overnight in the hotel when leaving port the next day). The Hyatt was nice. The comfort inn and suites are a little cheaper and I thought good for the price, but downside is that its located quite a few blocks from the beach/marina and I didn't like the area.

Hi.

How long you gonna be here in Paradise?

Where in LA, how long, etc.

Me and the SoCal crew can hook you up. No problem.

Lets talk.

Not long enough :) however I arrive at LAX on the 17 February and should be through by 20;00 I haven't booked ant accomodation or diving. I have read about the Kelp but other than that I don't know anyhing about the diving.

I depart for Taihiti on the evening of the 21 February so no diving on the 21 but I'm OK on the 18, 19 and 20 thats Sunday Monday and Tuesday. I'm not sure but I think it may be Presidents day on the Monday.

I don't usually dive on Sundays, but a ton of SoCal's do.

Where are you staying LA area? Or are you going to be hating life cuz someone played a prank on you and said, "Orange County is just like LA..."

The diving is much colder than what you'll be facing in Tahiti, so you'll need to bring a thicker wetsuit or drysuit.

If you don't care about seeing anything in L.A. and just want to dive, you might be better off heading over to Catalina Island. The problem is that you get in too late for the Catalina Express boat. You might want to consider staying at a hotel near LAX on Feb 17, then take a taxi or shuttle to the Catalina Express launch in Long Beach. Stay on Catalina Island and dive to your heart's content on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, then head back to LAX on Feb 21. There's shore diving (Casino Point) and several boats that offer 2 or 3 tank trips to the various sites around the island, plus you can rent a thicker suit or any other gear you might need at one of several shops on the island.

Otherwise, and this might be a big otherwise: you will need a car. Taxis are impractical for touring L.A. unless you have a very big budget. You will also need a hotel. LAX is close enough to the Long Beach and San Pedro docks that you can use it as a convenient base for your touring and diving, since hotels are much cheaper around there than other "more desirable" parts of town. Anywhere by the water or on the westside will be much pricier or a dump, and you do not want to stay downtown period. Check http://californiadiveboats.com/ for a comprehensive list of dive boats. They leave early.

Another good idea for spending a few days in the L.A. area is to go to San Diego where there are numerous boat diving and shore diving options. You won't see Hollywood, but there's a nice zoo and even the opportunity for a quick trip to Mexico, and the city is far less overwhelming for a tourist.

Thanks for that Mossman, I'm bringing a Drysuit so hopefully I'll be ok with that. I will need Gas a weights though.

Catalina seems to be an OK place to be. As a tourist I'm a bit of a heathen. I know that there will be plenty to see and do. I haven't been to the West Coast before but realise that I won't have a lot of time so I thought that I would limit myself to the diving.

The more information that I can gather the easier it will be when I arrive. Do any local laws or rules exist as far as diving is concerned. I'm alone so i don't have a buddy can you forsee aproblem with that?

So reading between the lines then Ken. Don't stay in Orange county! I haven't booked accomodation as yet. I wanted to find out where to dive first and sort that out.I'm open to suggestions though.

Ditto on the rental car. LA is VERY spread out and taxis are horrifically expensive. Just the round-trip taxi fare between LAX and Long Beach could easily pay for a day's car rental.

As far as accomodations, I also agree with Mossman in that LAX is a good base for your explorations. There are many hotels nearby of all price ranges. When near LAX, try to stay west of I-405 (San Diego Freeway) otherwise you'll end up in a rather questionable area. Anaheim, in "The O.C." is another area with a large concentration of hotels (due to Disneyland) but is not real convenient to most of LA's tourist traps and dive destinations. Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the eastern San Fernando Valley (Studio City, Burbank, Glendale) are more convenient to the tourist traps but you'll have a long drive to the shoreline and airport. Long Beach has some hotels but parts of that city are quite questionable, I would definitely inquire here about any potential lodging there before making non-refundable deposits. There's nothing wrong with staying at any of the downtown LA luxury hotels, except you'll be bored to tears. There's little to see in the daytime and the place is a ghost town at night.

Local laws -- the only ones I can think of is that if shore diving off Laguna Beach (in "The O.C."), a snorkel and a dive buddy are required. Other than that there's nothing you need to be concerned about, especially if using a charter operation. Dive charters usually assign "insta-buddies" if you didn't bring your own. Keep in mind though that unlike warm water dive destinations, our charter boats offer little more than mere transportation to/from the dive site and air fills. Some don't even offer food.

For the limited time you'll be here, San Diego may be a bit too far as you'll be on the road for 2 hours each way, longer is traffic is bad (and it might be that weekend as Monday is Presidents' Day). If you really want to see San Diego, seriously consider taking Amtrak as it's cheap and is just as fast as by car, faster if traffic's bad. Only thing is that you'll need to make your way to downtown (Union Station) or else one of the train stations in northern Orange County to catch it. However, there is an inexpensive shuttle service called the "Union Station FlyAway" which picks you up at LAX and drops you off at Union Station if you're considering doing this.

No local rules here on Catalina. I dive solo and without a snorkel most of the time. The dive park is an easy site... no boat required. 7mm suits are readily available at SCUBA Luv and CDS, as well as any other gear you might need.

If I'm not out on the boat Sunday, I can dive the Park with you. If I am on the boat, you can always dive on it ($117.50 incl. tax for three dives with continental breakfast and lunch) .
