Can someone make a recommendation for a cold water glove? I am planning on lake dives in the near future. The water temp is about 55 - 65 Degrees at the surface.

At what temperature does it help to go from a 3mm to 5mm glove?

I like the Bare glove in the 3mm thickness. it is perfect for the water temps you are talking about. I used them at Catalina in 55 degree water and didn't worry about getting cold at all. I've tried the 5mm version and I didn't feel like I had enough dexterity or control of my fingers, so the 3mm is the one all the way.... check it out here. http://www.onestopscuba.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42_90&products_id=234. Cheers!

I don't use much in the hevier glove category as I go dry at those temps, however, I don't always use the dry gloves. If it is cold, I pull over a pair of those blue & cotton looking gardening type gloves over my 3 mils to keep in some heat. I can easily pull them off if I need better dexterity.

Really, you will likely own both, and use will vary on what you are doing and more importantly how long you are under.

Choice will be all about fit. Make sure you can get them on and off fairly easily. The heavier ones will wear you out. I have some real heavy OMS ones with the big gauntlet. BRUTAL to wear...but warm. I needed help getting them on.

I also prefer gloves with the elastic-velcro strap that goes all of the way around the wrist. They fit me better and don't loosen up as much.

I use Body Glove 5MM Titanium Supreme. I never had an issue with the gloves being too warm in any temperature on the upper end (~mid 80's max) when I needed them for protection. They do the job in the lower 50's F for warmth in the local quarrys here. There was plenty of flexibility, good palm grip, and finger feel. So I guess I vote 5MM at those temps.

Im not a fan of spending big money were its not needed but I hate to wear gloves or hoods. After trying out a couple different styles I went to Hendrson Hyperstretch, 7mm in hood and 5 mm in gloves. These are the only two peices or Henderson gear I own but they make cold water diving bearable !!

To get off tight gloves pull the seam back at the underside of your wrist and blow air in them, just enought to inflate them a little and they fly off.

Deep Sea 6mm gloves can be found for as little as $19.99. I like them. Velcro strap. Any temps blow 60 and I am in 6mm gloves. A gauntlet style glove will tend to be a little warmer. Keeping hands and head warm are very important. If they are colder than the rest of your body, they will convince the rest of your body that it is cold too. Just my experience. As others said, fit is very important. Happy diving!

Go for a 5mm "Waterproof" brand. No velcrow..zipper instead. Warm, easy on easy off. Velcrow is a pain with heavy gloves on. I have owned 4 pair...Bare ..Dee sea..blue reef and Waterproof. Wp is clearly the best, but cost a few $$ more.

Go with 3mm deep sea gloves, those are the best for cold water, i was a hull cleaner in socal for a couple months and those jept my hand nice and toasty and are really durable, no big tears or anything. 5mm gloves will get be too bulky and it will be hard to grab treasure if you find any.

Evil :bgmad:

Thanks for everyone's help. I made a decision to purchase Body Glove 3mm gloves. They really did the job. I could feel water come through at the very beginning of the dive, but my hands never got cold.

Thanks again for the replies.
