This is kinda what I was talking about with my post. It gets a little more technical than I wanted to, but since we're spending this much time on the issue: http://megamyth.homestead.com/ccdquality.html

In the end, I think it's important (like I said in my first post) to get first hand accounts from people who have the camera. Find out what they like/dislike about the camera. Look for sample pictures and reviews via Google, or on sites like this one. Steve's Digicams is a VERY good resource as well.

I am actually being asked about a good starter UW setup for a close friend who is just starting out (No, I am not going to loan him my setup!).

This is what I'll be suggesting:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Olympus-CAMEDIA...549124127QQcategoryZ43457QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

My reasons:

Has a real Manual Mode!

Camera has a hotshoe (for low cost future ext. strobe expansion).

The internal flash is placed top center of the lens (great for that light tent method).

Larger than normal internal flashhead about the size of my 8080!

5MP (silmilar CCD as the Olympus 5050).

Very high quality Olympus glass, coated lens.

Super Macro mode like the 8080.

Lowest ISO of 50!!!

Has video clip.

Not too compact.

Price of housing $70 Camera less than $200

Pros? Cons?

That looks like a nice setup for the price.

Is the ebay item NEW? It may be a refurb, but that doesn't usually make a difference, as long as its warrantied.

Yes all new, actually I would get the housing from the Olympus eBay store, its low price and not much could go wrong with the housing. The camera is most likely on clearance at a Best Buy or something to get the warranty.
