Hi there,

I am looking for any sightings of the beautiful sea grass called eelgrass (Zostera) that is found growing out on sand or mud along our coast and at the islands. Eelgrass is a true flowering plant, not an alga, and is a different species than the surfgrass (Phyllospadix) that grows on rocks in shallow or surgy areas. Eelgrass is found in calmer or deeper waters, or in protected bays.

Eelgrass beds can be essential nursery habitat for many species of fish and invertebrates, and are fun to dive in! I am compiling information for a report of all known locations of eelgrass in Southern California, and am hoping that some of you on this forum can tell me about locations where you might have seen it.

thank you!
