Hello Everyone,

I am a Pacific Northwest Diver, that will be in NC for the weekend of 10/9-10/11 and I am very interested in finding a local dive charter, I lost count of my dives somwhere after 500 and I have been diving for over 10 years. I like the smaller boats with personal service, if someone is able to help me I would be glad to help them if they ever come out to the Seattle Area, either PM or email. Update: I do expect to handle my own gear, I just prefer smaller groups, I just need tanks and weights.

I do appreciate everyone's input.

Thanks,

Travis

Hi Travis,

These are all dive operations in the Morehead City area:

http://www.discoverydiving.com/
http://www.olympusdiving.com/
http://www.diverdownscubadiving.com/
http://www.seatales.com/
http://www.atlantischarters.net/

The first two are very popular, busy dive operations. I've used Discovery more than once and they are a great shop. Olympus is also very good. Flip a coin between 'em.

Of the other three, I've heard good things about Diver Down, but never used them. I have no knowledge or experience with either of the other two.

I'm local to the Morehead City area, so PM me me if I can be any help.

These threads would be a good place to start:

It's pretty hard to find personal service anywhere on a dive boat in NC, but divers here seem to like it that way. No one will carry your tanks, lead you on a guided tour, or serve snacks during surface interval. At the same time, no one will mess with your gear, babysit you, or tell you to be back on board in 30 min.

Good Luck, I'm sure you will have a great time -

I know a bit about Diver Down, (I was out with him for 2 days once upon a time) he caters to really hard core divers. He will go out in most any conditions, from what I hear he seldom if ever cancels a dive. Generally his sights are a bit deeper and are all day trips 2 tank dives. So if you are hard core you would probably like him, if you lean more towards simple recreation you might want to check out the first 2 suggestions. I know nothing about the other two.

Travisc, all the operators mentioned above are great. Since you mentioned you like smaller boats (assuming not the crew boats) you'll be limited to Discovery Diving, SeaTales, and Atlantis. All are great operations that run 6 pack vessels. I currently work for one of them but on occasion mate for the some of others as well when they need a hand. Discovery has one 6pack the Captain's Lady. She's a 36' Bruno. As of today, I believe SeaTales is still down with engine problems. Not to say they won't be up and running by then so it won't hurt to give them a call. They run a 42' Bruno Stillman Dory for groups of 6 or less. Atlantis, is another 6 pack although originally a 46' Sportfisher, Bobby Edwards has it well adapted as a dive boat. Of the three, Atlantis tends to cater to a more technical crowd but does just as many regular trips. Regular being one offshore 100-120' and one inshore 60-90' or two offshore depending on the operator or the divers.

Oct makes for fine diving here on the Crystal Coast. Water temps are still nice but the summer heat has started to subside. My rec would be to call them all ASAP and find out which still have openings. They fill up fast, even in Oct. Often you can squeeze on with a group or if the boat isn't booked yet, have them put you on it. Chances are they'll have no trouble finding enough folks to run. PM me if you have any questions or if I can help you further.

As always, Coop has the inside story on what's happening in the Morehead City area.

I'm pretty sure that SeaTales is back after some major engine rebuilding. They were planing a run out to the Manuela and Malchace a couple of weeks ago but canceled due to weather. I also heard that they ran this past weekend. Boat engines being what they are, it's possible that they were running for a while but are down again. Give them a call anyway - no one should be diving this week (weather) so you will probably be able to reach people.

Rich, I try to stay on top of things  but the only thing I've stayed on top of lately are all the loose objects in my yard and my boat. This NE blow has things flying around like crazy.... ; I'm thinking about taking up kite flying. I tried to get in touch with ST today after I posted the original comment. I know they replaced the engine and on the first trip blew and injector. An easy fix but it limits the range with only 7 cylinders. If they were scheduled for the Malchase then I'd assume they've fixed it. Thanks for the input. When are you going to make it back down? Let me know and I'll buy you a cold adult beverage of your choice. Until then....

Hi Coop -

I hope my post didn't come across as a backhanded compliment. That wasn't my intention. I'll let you know next time I'm headed your way. I'm down at Ocean Isle for a few days this week. I was planing to dive, but the weather...well.....lets just say I hope the forecast is wrong.
